Feast of the Virgin of Carmen

At the feet of the image of ‘Mamacha Carmen,’ the town of Paucartambo fills with joy as locals and visitors alike are swept up in the fervor of a celebration that combines elements of both Andean and Spanish cultures. During this festival, little devils run through the streets and dancers perform their best steps in honor of their patron saint.

Day 1

In the morning, you will be transferred from Cusco to Paucartambo (at 2830 meters above sea level), known as the folkloric capital of Cusco. On the way, you will visit the Chullpas of Ninanmarka and a box lunch will be provided. The festival begins with the ringing of bells and the bursting of fireworks, followed by the performance of “dianas” by musical bands. Next, you will witness the “cera apabulla,” or the procession of candles and wax to the local temple. In the afternoon, you will enjoy various dance groups and explore the town of Paucartambo. As night falls, you will be transferred to your camp at Tres Cruces.

Day 2

The day will start early with the sunrise at 2:45 a.m., weather permitting. After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Paucartambo to attend the blessing mass, accompanied by your guide. In the afternoon, you will participate in a second procession across the Carlos III bridge, where the Virgin of Carmen blesses the attendees. At the end of the procession, you will witness the “guerrilla” between the “Qollas” from the Andes and the “Antis” from the jungle. After the festival concludes, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Cusco.
